(figuratively speaking that is)
Remember, in the last Avengers movie, Avengers: Infinity War, where all the superheroes came together in an epic attempt to defeat Thanos? Oh wait, that’s right. Ant-Man and Hawkeye were nowhere to be seen. Ant-Man was apparently missing due to house arrest (which really is a weak excuse when half of the world is at stake). No worries though, we know Ant-Man survived and will be making an appearance in the newest Avenger’s film. But it seems to be that we will not be seeing Clint Barton as Hawkeye…
Let’s refresh our MCU history, shall we? Clint Barton AKA Hawkeye is originally a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and he is known for his badass bow and arrow skills. But like all superheroes, he lives a dualistic lifestyle. When he is not assembling with the Avengers and keeping the world from ultimate destruction, he is a husband to wife Laura and a dad of three. Talking about a triple threat. But remember how we did not know about his secret family until the Avengers: Age of Ultron?! This is because Clint, number one family man, purposefully kept his home life a secret to keep his family from harm. Well, after defeating Ultron, Clint bowed out (ha, see what I did there?) and put his arrow down to focus on his family life.
But, a movie later and a call later from no other than Steve Rogers AKA Captain American himself, Clint suits back up in Captain America: Civil War. Hawkeye decides to “fight the good fight” with Captain America and goes against the proposed government supervision of heroes to aid Rogers in his escapades. But at the end of Captain America: Civil War, Clint is arrested and taken in for going against political supervision. However, this does not last long because good
So, it is no surprise that Hawkeye is nowhere to be seen in Avengers: Infinity War and at the end of the film, we as fans have no idea if Hawkeye was one of the ones to bite the dust. But on December 7th, the Avengers: Endgame trailer released, and we got to see a glimpse of Hawkeye…or did we? When Black Widow is seen coming face to face with Clint, it is not at his farmland home but rather in the streets of Japan. And instead of his normal Hawkeye attire, Clint is seen looking like a ninja of sorts, wearing a black mask and quite LITERALLY slaying enemies with a katana. So, is Clint just trying a new ~lewk~ or has he taken a new identity?
Well, if we look back at comic history, it seems to be as if Clint has taken on the Ronin identity, an identity used in the comics for covert purposes. This is huge however because it really brings to light (or to dark) the current state of the MCU. With Clint donning a new identity, there are a few things we can speculate on. First, we can assume that the Ronin identity is symbolic to Clint’s emotional state. Though we know that Clint survived the decimation, we can assume that his family might have not been so lucky. Hence, the new, darker, mysterious Clint Barton. But it could also be due to the guilt he may have for not helping his fellow friends fight the great titan Thanos. Which ultimately led to the death of half the human race. Or maybe the new identity is simply due to politics, and humans pretty-much blaming superheroes for the big snap on humanity. Most likely, it is probably a combination of all these. Taking on the identity of Ronin seemingly represents a newfound mission for Clint. So, what does this all mean exactly?? I guess we all will find out April 26th. Tbh, I personally hope this newfound mission brings us back our beloved Peter Parker. RIP.
